Innovation: The MillionDollar Homepage

Innovative ideas inspire me. There are things that some people do and you sit there and marvel at their grandeur. I am very embarassed to say that I came across TheMillionDollar Homepage recently and I was quite impressed by the story behind it. A kid called Alex Tew, 21 years old at the time came up with this idea when he was worried about the serious possibility of being saddled with debt after finishing college. He needed to come up with a plan and fast, to ensure that loans were not going to be a problem. So he came up with the simple idea of selling ad space at $1 per pixel in 10 X 10 blocks. The idea was too simple that he didn’t think that it could work, amazingly for him, the idea worked and in exactly four months, the million dollar homepage made $1037 100 as they had to auction the last 100 pixels on eBay. And all this happened in 2005.

Many other websites selling adspace have since materialised but the 21 year old thought of it first. I even came across another page called The Billiondollar Homepage, they are obviously copycats and such, this reduces the integrity of the whole game. The MillionDollar Homepage is 22% dead now but this, then kid, managed to get his million dollars minus taxes at the time. He didn’t even bother to finish school after that, he took his million minus taxes and took off for greener pastures.

“Dreamers are mocked as impractical. The truth is they are the most practical, as their innovations lead to progress and a better way of life for all of us.”

Robin Sharma

There is enough money to go around for the big thinker, if he/she is willing to act on it. According to Alex Tew, there was nothing special about his idea but no-one had done it, this is the crux of the issue. Whatever idea you can think of it, put pen to paper, strategise and make it happen.
